Associated working time in the Higher Education Academic Staff Award (the Award) refers to work that is compensated through the casual lecturing and tutoring rates.
'Associated working time' is not defined by the Award.
There are separate rates for lecturing, tutoring and marking in the Award.
Associated working time for lecturing or tutoring
When a casual academic employee is lecturing or tutoring, they’re paid a casual hourly rate that compensates them for:
- one hour of delivery time, and
- a period of associated working time.
The amount of associated working time covered by the casual hourly rate changes depending on the type of lecture or tutorial being delivered.
Associated working time generally includes a limited body of work that is closely connected with delivering a lecture or tutorial. Examples may include:
- preparing the lecture or tutorial
- speaking to a student at the end of a lecture or tutorial
- marking a test that was given during the lecture or tutorial
A casual academic must be engaged and paid for at least 2 hours of work on each occasion they are required to attend work. This includes payment for any associated working time.
Marking rates
Marking of assessment tasks is generally paid at the separate marking rates in the Award and is not ordinarily included in associated working time.
